(Yeah, it's a little bit too late to reply, but...)
It's kinda impossible to make this kind of shield, since everything about ships is "walls"+"hulls"+"gaps" and there's no way to prevent water from going one way or another, except close up the "gaps" with doors.

Best suggestion ever: Add banana peels, CLOWN BE PROUD!1 (If they're there, and I cant find them, then I'm so blind.) They should work like this: On contact with any person, they get stunned for 3 or more seconds. (Actually, make them however you want, I would really love to just use them ingame.)

I think character in full dark can see something in 1 meter ahead of him. (I love paint.)
