It would make healing items only good in the middle of combat, which is not very common since you have no time to heal while fighting. Besides, it's kinda weird someone with a wound would just start to heal it... it makes more sense to start getting worse from it.

Well, they are not that useless. You can throw corpses out of the airlock to distract creatures like tiger threshers and get a chance to escape. They usually take enough time to devour a body unless there are more than one.
