Scaling down a character?

I read the "Character/creature config files" thread and I could understand some of it but making a new creature seems like a lot of work... So I thought maybe I could start by making something simpler, like a baby mantis. Wrong! It's not as simple as just scaling down the creature. It swims alright but when it walks... it's like it turns almost bipedal and as tall as the normal mantis.

I tried messing around with the other parameters but I just make it worse. D;
Any ideas on how to properly scale down a character?

1. edit sprite(make it smaller) 2. change hit box and sprite settings to match your new sprite

Hmm... the only thing I haven't tried is to make the actual sprites smaller. I just used the "scale" thing and put 0.5, which scales the whole thing to half the size.
I did tried putting smaller values to the hitboxes and the other entries in there but it just made things worse, as I mentioned before.

The thing is it only seems to affect the walking animation. The creature swims with no visual problems.
