I didn't say we are constricted by it; I said that the game will not benefit at all (quite the opposite) from giving the main character any relevant personality.

You know how they never allow Gordon Freeman/Link/Doom Marine/etc to speak? "tis the same principle. They are barely characters on their own, acting mainly as avatars for the player. Making them actually speak and have a personality would take away that aspect of them. In a horror game, immersion is...

Yes but the main character isn't really supposed to be an actual character; as in, 'tis a stand-in for the player to project him/herself in the game. If you make it speak, give it a unique voice, you take that away.
