The link below has tips for sub building. There's one that explains a way to partially separate the engine from the main grid. That will help a lot with that issue.

With the lack of tutorials, the best way to learn how to make subs, is to reverse engineer the vanilla ones. Break them apart and check the wiring and see how stuff works. That's how I learned most of it.
