Why do people keep referring to them as SCP-500-1?

It's just 500.

I think that 500-1 is an acceptable name. 500 refers to the plastic can containing the pills, not the pills themselves.

SCP-500 is the pills, the container wouldnt have a classification unless it to had anomalous properties.
The 500 article doesn't give reference to an SCP-500-1, test log just says SCP-500 pills.

Let's look into the article:
SCP Foundation wrote:Description: SCP-500 is a small plastic can which at the time of writing contains forty-seven (47) red pills. One pill, when taken orally, effectively cures the subject of all diseases within two hours, exact time depending on the severity and amount of the subject's conditions. Despite extensive trials, all attempts at synthesizing more of what is thought to be the active ingredient of the pills have been unsuccessful.
You see, SCP-500 is the pill case, though you're right at the point that the pills are not designated as SCP-500-1 to SCP-500-XX.
