I don't see their purpose in the game anymore. Am I the only one who always passes them up?

Well, it depends really. I still pick them up even after all this time. Because you encounter this certain mapseed where you won't find 914.
But yeah, it's optional really. Maybe they can be replaced? Who knows.

Maybe they are an SCP of their own....?

you need to use the batteries for conjunction items like the s-nav or radio.

Pretty much this. If you get a bad seed or one that spawns 914 really far away batteries are a life saver. Also, more items may be added to the game that require batts, but only time will tell

1. The S-NAV is pretty much useless, unless you put them in 914 to detect SCP's, they are useless
2. There's no point of the radio, unless than random talks and the code of Maynard office, nothing else

It really isn't. If people knew how to use it, maybe it wouldn't be considered useless. It also helps tell which rooms are dead ends.
