About the whole competing thing and doing the same model as another person. First off, if you look at a development company, they have different people for different jobs, correct? If you go through the weaving of a company, you will realize that every person contributed on a different area. Programming, Modeling, Animating, Voice Acting, Music, Concept Art, Sound, etc... Each area would have groups of people in each one as well, even these people are divided into groups. Such as the lead programmer, lead concept artist, and so on...
If a lead programmer were to declare to his boss and to everyone else, that he is going to work on voice acting of a character, even though they already have a voice actor to that character, and say do some "friendly" competition, and say best wins. The entire project would collapse if everyone started doing that, because that is NOT collaboration. The programmer would get fired. Now, doesn't that sound unreasonable. I am not taking a side. But sense some have mentioned just how the "development" of a company goes, most of the time they all work together.
Just stating the reality of how things normally are.
Its about the game, and the people with the passion to develop it.
Not competition...

Night, what is the reference you are using when making the model? Do you have a picture of are you taking elements from different sources and applying them to your model?

I'm taking several references, though, I'm not applying them as a background to model on as you might have thought, here are some of the references I'm using for the helmet and gas mask for example:
