You know how they never allow Gordon Freeman/Link/Doom Marine/etc to speak? "tis the same principle. They are barely characters on their own, acting mainly as avatars for the player. Making them actually speak and have a personality would take away that aspect of them. In a horror game, immersion is extremely important, and part of that is accomplished by having such an avatar for you to project yourself. Giving it a personality removes that.

Doesn't mean we have to be constricted to it.

I didn't say we are constricted by it; I said that the game will not benefit at all (quite the opposite) from giving the main character any relevant personality.

Welp, I actually got a really nice mic, so I'm totally free for any voice acting for the scientists that could be needed.

I'm on Enma Ai's side. If you ever played any awesome games like Half Life, you would know that in the whole saga Gordon Freeman doesn't say a single word or sound (Maybe except of the small grunt he does when falling from high places), it creates a really strong feel of immersion in the game. So yeah. I prefer D-9341 to be completely mute.

I'm on the side of silent protagonist too, you are D-9341 as the player.

I agree with Irontaco, a silent character makes you feel like "Hey you! You are D-9341" Like with Link in The Legend of Zelda

I feel as if the player should pass by a group of D-class who; A: Seemed relaxed and comment on 173 (Nothing bad happened to them.) B: Distressed (Perhaps one of them died, or they witnessed it's incredible speed.) C: Seem scared, but mock the player because it's his turn to test 173, or D: Only one D-class passes by, whimpering, and on the verge of tears (The other people with him were killed.)
