Well, ok, this does sound like a risky idea.
Normally, horror games are linear because it is much easier to set up the scares for the player, but since this isn't a horror game, but rather a horror-survival (yes, it is very different) that won't necessary be a problem. Although they will need to be careful to not make the scares and monster be to predictable. Might wanna make the monster not only come out at night.
Since this is a horror survival, the fact that you can chop down trees, craft weapons, and make shelters is very important. So, it seems this might go for the "set up camp at day time, fight for your life at night" (I am waiting for a fucktard to now say this game is a minecraft rip-off) Which sound right this being a sandbox game, although I'm positive that the monster will eventually attack you during the day when you least expect it. The combat seems wonky, unreliable, and something you would use when you panic. This is GREAT! If you were able to easily kill the monsters, where is the fear? (or should I say, F.E.A.R.? yeah, ok, that was bad) So, it seems the ideal thing would be to run and hide. Perfect.
It is also said that the scenery will change throughout time. Plants will grow and die, trees will fall randomly. It will rain whenever it wants, and the tides might change. This is also great, since it will probably fuck you up. Imagine you have a perfect base somewhere hidden. Only one entrance, and maybe a one way exit. It is night, and you are running away from the monsters. You don't notice it, but there is a storm, and some small trees are on the floor. You don't care, you are running for your life. You want to go to your base where all your weapons are, maybe you have a trap set (it seems likely, that you might be able to set traps such as fires or nooses) so you might at least survive until daytime. However, there is a huge tree in the ground, blocking your only entrance. What do you do? Nothing, you are boned. The game has fucked you over, and you are now dead. Yeah, ok, I don't know if this will be in the game, but as far as I've seen, it looks like something like this might happen.
So, what I think? I think this is a bold step to trying to make something new, and it seems to be working so far.
