I'm pretty sure the Mayans did what they did for one of two reasons:

1) They wanted to screw with people a thousand years or so in the future and got a good laugh at our expense.
OR
2) They cataloged 1000 or so years in the future and said "Screw it" and went on to do something more productive with their lives, such as human sacrifice

Actually its one of the mayan time periods called a Baktun, which happens to end on 21st 12 2012, and will be the beginning of the 14th baktun on the 22nd 12 2012.
I think ill find some people who believe the world will end on the 21st, then ask them for their money since they don't need them according to their believes.

If there are a lot of people believing the world will end, everybody should be prepared for that. There will be chaos on the streets.
