Discussion??

Hey there bros, I'd like to hear everyone's views on modding :) whether in the PC or console realm, just give me your all out opinion. What do you like about mods? Do you think the rules on modding should be more severe or less strict on consoles? Whatever you can think of on the topic will be appreciated.

This is for a publications news story at my school so if you'd like to PM me about any specifics please do so, also PM me personal details such as your name/preferred alias if you'd like to have you're comment put in my story!! ^-^

P.S I've been working on the vocal samples as requested for the admins/moderators out there :p

modding is extremly beneficial. Most developers don't have time or manpower to build in all that they would like to, plus many are simply incompetent. With modding, not only can bugs be fixed, but also new elements can be added to enhance the gameplay. It is perfect to make the game fun again when you got bored in it, for example Oblivion or Skyrim. Restricting modding is bogus and should never happen.
On the other hand, i must say that mods tend to spoil the game for you, especially if your game is fairly new. My advice is to play the game through without mods, then they are most fun.

There you have some material for your presentation, good luck.

Personally, I think Mods can really show what a Gaming Engine can do. Especially on PC. Minecraft Mods, Source Engine Mods.. Heck, Even DayZ itself is a Mod.

For Consoles, I am not too sure. It would be pretty nice to have User Made Content available but then it would most likely have to be approved by the company running the online service, Such as Microsoft or Sony.

And also mainly depends on what the developer of the game allows.

Frictional Games allowed users to make Custom Stories for Amnesia : The Dark Descent.

Games made by developers such as Bungie, Who mainly make games for Consoles, don't seem to want their Games to be modded. Those who do such things usually end up banned from the online service. So I guess it may also depend on the Game Genre.

Sandbox games and engines are an open choice for mods. You can even make different genres using such engines such as Trouble in Terrorist Town being made using Gary's Mod.

Mods in a First Person Shooter such as Halo or Call of Duty could give users a very unfair advantage against those who have not modded their consoles or games.

Even though, Trouble in Terrorist Town is also a First Person Shooter.. It allows mods of maps and weapons to be made and the players always end up with balanced gameplay. A player who uses mods to break the limits of the map is usually banned from the servers.

So all in all, I think Mods should stick to PC for now. I have heard of Valve's new console possibly letting users mod their games but I need to read up more about that.

As for mods on a Console, It would be very time consuming have to remake a Mod in a completely different language, make sure it works fine then wait for it to be approved by the online service who would most likely have to review every single update made to the mod.
