If OP does in fact plan on taking this project seriously, he'd be better off writing a decent design document and getting critiques there rather than spontaneously starting a project. In many cases, DDs are what prevent mechanics from breaking mid-development. People here are hard on him because it would appear that he's unwilling to take mild criticism on a control scheme.

Well monocle, I'm gonna change a bit. Seeing as how everyone wants it so, the jump button shall be moved to the space bar. Just so it's clear, I will be implementing customizable controls.

Now that that's out of the way, let's discuss story. I believe the main characters should all be demigods sent on a mission to kill the titans. I also believe that the game shouldn't hold the player's hand through the duration of the game, but instead leave the player to make choices for him/her self. A lot like Super Metroid. This allows for minimal story, and reward for exploration.

Hate to bring this topic back up, but why Game Maker in particular as the engine of choice? It's fine assuming you keep the scope of the game in check, just wondering.

Following the thing about writing a DD, IMHO the story should be inspired by the game-play, and thus written after nearly everything else on the document. I'll take Metroid as an example because it seems like you've invested a lot of time in the series, as have I. You can tell by the early games that the story was little more than an afterthought of the game-play. Sure the style of the game was established prior for the art department but the overlaying story was summed up in a few sentences. Compare this to a certain 'disappointment' that obviously ended up being a game where the game-play ended up being an afterthought to the story, as many mechanics simply don't make sense otherwise.

Feel free to take this with a tablespoon of salt.

Game Maker is the only engine I know how to code in at the moment. For the final release, I plan on using a different engine, but which we use can be determined when need be.

I plan on creating the gameplay and the story at the same time. I feel it will be more intertwined this way. Now Nintendo, as you said, came up with the story for Metroid after the game play was made, and the story felt pretty intertwined. I probably sound like a retard because I'm trying to come up with reasons for this other than the fact that I kind of want to kill two birds with one stone, as it were. But eh, if the other developers want to come up with the story after the game play, then so be it.

If you plan on a different engine for the final release, you should start with said engine. You shouldn't just work on the game in one engine, and then before the final version just change it completely.

Code: Select all

Omniary: fuck you anglerfish can't smell
Dr. Trialtrex21: how you know bitch
Omniary: it probably could smell you though
could probably smell your fucking dank ass nasty powersuit structure gel trog ass enslaved protein bullshit sloshing in your suit from a mile away

You're probably right. That would prove to be pretty difficult and time consuming.
I guess that settles it. Unless some one els wants to do the programming for this game, then it's gonna be made in Game Maker 8.1 Lite, which BTW has a water mark.

I like ass. I also felt pretty shit upon with that "do you even realize that this is a 2D game" statement, as if i was an infant and never played a single game in my life, so i wanted to return the shit.

You wanted my idea on how the control scheme should look like, though since these are supposedly customizable, this isn't much of importance now. Never limit the jump key on the up arrow, your fingers will hurt like fucking hell and combined with a doubletap on the other arrows for a dash you will want to amputate them and have a mechanical hand do the finger breakdance for you, which will also most likely simply split and crack open aswell.

You definitly should have the story roughly carved out before intertwining it in your game. Though that depends on how serious you take it.

Free exploration and leaving players to make choices for himself are noble goals, but these require good level designs and writing to prevent a confusing mess. You bring up super metroid, and even though it had supreme level design and was made by masterful game developers, i found myself getting lost numberous of times. I can't imagine what kind of hell will break loose when you start your first project with ambitions like these.

I personally would like the story to take either turn, that means the choice of turning against the gods or destroying the titans. I could dish out more info on that if you like. As long as you don't disrespect me again, i will not touch your private areas. And i will also not look at it. Not fiercly atleast.
