I don't think people hate Pewdiepie so much for his personality or content, but rather for what said content has resulted in. While he isn't the first person to use facecams where they aren't necessary or use an obnoxious, repetitive persona, the sheer popularity of his content spawned a cesspool of poorly produced LPs at best.
The whole facecam thing is the lesser of the two evils, all it really shows is how little effort you're putting forth is analyzing your own content, so you just slap your face on there in hopes that someone will appreciate it. I guess you could justify it for horror games, but if the primary entertainment derived from your content is your visual reaction rather than commentary, you shouldn't be surprised if people think it's just a gimmick; because it is. This isn't really that horrible, I just don't see how the idea of "Let's cover gameplay with my face, people will surely enjoy that rather than the game I'm playing right?" really became commonplace outside of joke LPs and livestreams.
As for the whole persona thing, regardless of whether or not you like Pewdiepie's, it doesn't really have any substance to it. To be fair, it's rather ingenious given that there's really only 3 possible reactions to it. Either you enjoy it because it's repetitive crude humour, despise it's because it's repetitive crude humour, or don't give a shit because it's repetitive. This grants him tons of attention from fans and (fuck I hate this word so much) "haters" alike. Athene is another prime example of this. Most people would agree that the man is, quite frankly, rather shit at most games he plays, but people watch him because he puts on an obnoxious persona and does dumb shit. Unfortunately, most people don't know how to play this off and end up making really shitty LPs. When people with half a fucking brain call them out on their bullshit, all you get is the typical "1v1 me rl bro, ill bash ur hed in. swer on me mum" response.
At the end of the day, I wouldn't call these videos LPs. I'm not saying that they aren't valid entertainment for some, I just can't justify that the reasons for watching PDP or Athene are the same as for watching, say, speedrunners and people who primarily provide actual content about the game they're playing.
Edit: I guess there's also the fact that PDP and friends have the worst fucking fans it the world, but so does everything else.
Plus, his fandom is quite ridiculous these days, so I'm just a bit worried.
