So, its going to be a two player game? If so, might want to change the controls for the second character, since not everyone has the numberpad to the right of the keyboard. And the attack controls interfere with the first player.

Maybe player one uses arrow keys to move and buttons close to them, such as l k m o p, to attack and stuff. While player two uses wasd to move and keys like f g h t y to attack and stuff.

And if I'm talking out my ass and this is a one player game just that the characters have different keys, then make them be the same keys for both characters. There is no point on having both characters have different controls. It'll make learning the game much more difficult.

I like the idea itself. Greek mythology will give you a lot to work on, from monsters to gods to just impressive humans. Magic would also fit very nicely, mostly as a side resource while weapons being your main. When using a magic shield, it slowly uses mana, or whatever it is powered by, while if it takes a hit it loses a bigger chunk, There should also be shield or sword shielding. Up, mid and down, to defend, so that you have to defend the area that you are being attack in. Therefore, normal defense would be your normal thing, but risky since you can get hit, while magic defense is more effective but costs you power.

What art style do you have in mind? If it a side scroller I would recommend something like the art style from Mark of the Ninja. Animated cartoons. Since realistic graphics look weird on a side scroller.

I'm not changing the controls. They will remain as is at least until I can get online co-op working, that is if Game Maker lite supports online functions.

I'm using Game Maker because it's the only way I now how to program, at least for now. If someone els wants to do the programming with a different language, that's perfectly fine with me.

good luck with game maker though, it's an ass of an engine.

But on the other note, you want to have ideally "y" or the space bar assigned to jumping, in addition to the up arrow. I think these keys are more comfortable and more common.
And i don't know how exactly you will defend, but if its supposed to be a quick block you want to assign it to a different key that is very accessable, like shift for example. Also please add left control as another crouching key. If it is only on the arrow keys you will have a lot of problems with quickly dodging attacks and moving forward.

I don't like the idea of something like stamina limiting your actions. As a sidenote, it would be very appreciated if magic would atleast use mana as a ressource, and not stamina. I do think that if magic does become part of the game, then you should have a great avaibility of spells avaible so people can individualize their characters. If all a wizard or spellcasting hero gets is a fireball, then you can cut that because that shit is disappointing.

Hope you read my feedback, or i will beat you.
joke.
i will beat you anyways.
Hah, i am just kidding.
...AM I?
Waiting for your reply.
I AM A HUGE ATTENTION WHORE.

That's the thing. I'm not allowed to spend any money.

You do realize this is a 2D game, right?
Because the control scheme is getting a lot of negative feed back, how about switching it out with another control system based on one I use when playing emulators. Now it makes it harder to allow multiplayer functions on one keyboard, so it makes online compatibility a must if I want to implement co-op or multiplayer vs.
