Yeah the collapse is a big thing to tackle, and people still are doing just that!
Even if the US decided, or was forced to, reduce their military funding, they are still leagues ahead of the rest of the world in that regard. I think that the US's obsession with their capitalist ideals is a bit dangerous, especially since many think any form of socialism is "evil" or words to that effect.
A good example is Health care, in my personal opinion I believe that it is the job or your Government to take care and look after their own citizens, and if they cannot do that then they have failed. My Government of Australia succeeds on this very well with Medicare, which equates to Universal Healthcare for all Australian citizens. In fact one time I got a bad case of pneumonia which could have killed me, long story short had my family been forced to pay for the hospital stay and subsequent expenditures I can safely say we would have had to have sold our house to pay. This is of course if we did not have paid medical care.
It will be interesting to see what direction the US takes in the coming years and decades. Despite what anyone may think of the US I would not want to see the US to crumble apart, simply because I don't want to see almost many millions of people be torn apart, as well as for global stability.
