Cupcakes and Rainbow Factory are actually quite funny if you look at them in hindsight, especially if you read the original Cupcakes before its spelling and grammar was fixed like I did. They don't come close to the level of Cheerilee's Garden, which I feel is written much better. I actually had to take a break in the middle of that one because it made me feel nauseous, and I've read Sweet Apple Massacre and Lil' Miss Rarity and didn't bat an eyelid.

I would recommend Fallout: Equestria if it wasn't so goddamned long.

Cheerilee's Garden is okay, but as Steelpoint mentioned some time ago, Cheerilee's insanity was completely blown out of proportion and it is not really believable.
Sweet Apple Massacre...if I remember right that's that cupcakes inspired fic where Big Mac rapes and murders the CMC, I think I read that before I became a brony or even knew who the CMC were.
Lil' Miss Rarity is good, until Fallout Equestria I will never have the time to read.

I'll check out Fallout: Equestria and its related fanfics one day. I just have to be in the mood for long stories...

I haven't read many dark and gritty fics. In fact, I haven't even seen Cupcakes or Cheerilee's Garden. I have seen The Many Deaths of Rainbow Dash, though. It's basically just about Rainbow Dash dying in hilarious or ridiculous ways and respawning every time. It's played more for laughs than for horror, though.

90% of fics involve Rainbow Dash being murdered.

Posting this again, one of the best damn fan-fic's I've ever read.

Strangely enough, Sweet Apple Massacre was one of my first introductions to the fandom, before I'd even seen an episode. I remember reading it and thinking, "WHO ARE THESE PONIES!?" While I'm on the subject, Sonic Rainboom was the first episode I ever saw; I was linked to around the middle part from TV Tropes, thought it looked really good, then went back to watch the rest of the episode and eventually the rest of the season as well (By this point, Return of Harmony had only just been released).
