So no matter which way I go, the line still exists, which leads me to suspect the mesh for the spine uses a separate bit as well...

The only thing I can think of is brute force and making small gold bars along the parts of the UV map that were the supposed indents, moving them along that until I find the part that gets rid of that line...it'd take quite a few attempts though presumably...
