I believe you'd need to animate the skybox for that, wouldn't it be easier to have low poly models far away which permanently follow a settled route?
Slapping a sprite on would be best IMO, there's no point wasting performance on something the player will never notice.

So you mean to have a 2D sprite moving independently from the skybox?
Right, that'd really save performance, as long as it's far away enough to make it actually look like a 3D object.
